IT IS COMPLETELY SAFE!!! READ ON TO KNOW HOW

1. Jailbreaking messes around with the programming of the operating system in your iPod. Apple has placed a restriction that only those apps downloaded from the app store can be copied to the iPod. Jailbreaking removes this restriction. Its basically editing the core files of your iPod, which is safe.

2. Yes, its illegal. If you are living in US, then Apple will withdraw all support provided for your iPod. It will also void your warranty. However, if you restore your iPod after jailbreaking, it will not leave a trace that it was ever jailbroken.

4. No, it will not slow down your iPod. But Apple claims that it drains your battery faster, but I didn't face such a problem. (I have the iPod touch 4 as well; jailbroken with limera1n)

5. Pros - You can install external themes and apps for your iPod. You will no longer need an Apple account or an iTunes account. You can even get paid apps for free from a third party website called AppTrackr.org

Cons - Your warranty will be void, and your iPod may behave erratically, although its very very rare, if jailbroken correctly.

Go to limera1n.com to download limera1n for windows or mac.

Jailbreaking is NOT illegal! It ONLY voids your warranty! You can NOT be punished by law in any way shape or form if your caught jailbreaking your idevice! Ive been an idevice user since 08 and ive gone through many idevices. All you have to do is restore if you dont want the jailbreak.

John was right about everything he said except that it is actually legal, in the US anyway. however it does void your warranty but a quick restore will bring it back again.
